Kenyan business utilizes feces to improve health

The socially-motivated business Sanivation is turning feces into profit in Kenya. Sanivation installs their “blue box” plastic toilet containers for free, then charges an equivalent of $6.78 a month to collect the waste. This waste is then turned into charcoal, which in turn is sold in supermarkets under the Eco Flame brand. As a result, far fewer trees are felled in Kenya.

The project has the potential to prevent many deaths as only three in ten Kenyans have access to a decent toilet.
