South Korea and Kuwait announced their agreement to construct a smart city west of the captial city of Kuwait in 2019. The project will be implemented by both private and public contractors of South Korea led by Hyundai Architects and Engineers Associates Co. and POSCO A&C.

The prospective city could house up to 40,000 families and will cover an area of 15,913 acres. As the director of the South Korean Transport Ministry states, this will be the first export of a Korean version of a smart city. In his opinion, there will be a vast demand for further constructions of smart cities, for the population in the Middle East is growing a lot faster than in other regions of the world. South Korea sees itself playing a major role in realizing city planning projects to come.

South Saad Al-Abdulla, the name of the designed new city, will serve as a model for other emerging cities in Kuwait’s region. Currently, the country is presenting the prospect of planning nine new cities.
