Two start-up companies, Controlled Thermal Resources and Alger Alternative Energy, aim to build the nation’s largest geothermal power plant and mining operation in the Imperial Valley in the Californian southeastern desert. The power plant’s construction are to be completed in 2020. Then the plant would be able to generate six times the electricity as similiar facilities in the area. The mining operation includes extracting lithium carbonate, that is used for battery production, and manganese, zinc and other minerals. The mining will start in 2019. Lithium becomes extremely important because it is increasingly used for energy storage in EVs, homes and utility power plants.
