Will the entire agricultural production eventually resettle into factories? Image source: Shutterstock (#453673261)

Spread, an enterprise based in the Kyoto Prefecture, Japan, grows lettuce without the use of soil or sunlight in big artificial farms. Automation of traditional agricultural tasks such as planting seeds cuts the cost of labor by 50 percent while also increasing profitability. The factory-grown lettuce also benefits from not being subject to weather changes, and thus does not fluctuate in price. Spread started operating in 2013, and now wants to expand by growing other types of vegetable as well.
