The London Assembly’s Environment Committee released a report indicating the city’s plastic waste problem is close to being out of control. The Assembly calls on Mayor Sadiq Khan to introduce bottle return schemes such as the one in Germany, where 99 percent of plastic bottles are recycled. London residents should also be offered free water refills at designated stations, with smartphone apps specifically created to help them find the closest refilling spot.
One of the persisting problems is seen in inconsistent recycling bins that lead to confusion among citizens. Only when recycling is simple to understand and easy to execute will the problem be solved, says the CEO of London recycling firm First Mile, Bruce Bratley.
Recently, an investigation into the combatting of environmental damage caused by plastic drinks packaging has also been launched by the Parliament’s Environmental Audit Committee of MPs.
