At the Energy Storage Association’s conference in Denver on Wednesday, Lyndon Rive, president for global sales and service at Tesla’s energy division, made a stand for converting as many islands in the world as possible to solar and battery storage.
As islands often rely on imported diesel for power as they lack native fuel sources, they would benefit greatly from a firmed solar retrofit. It would reduce air pollution and economic dependence on fuel imports while being cheaper as well.
Tesla and SolarCity already realized such projects, for example in Kauai or on Ta’u in American Samoa. Obstacles include customer acquisition and getting equipment to the islands, but Rives was adamant that it is more than worth it.
