Microsoft takes unused TV channels to provide internet to rural areas

Microsoft wants to harness the unused channels between television broadcasts to help rural America get access to the internet. The goal is to connect two million people during the next five years. Many people stick have limited or no access to high-speed internet, and the white-spaces technology utilized can cover far greater distances than wireless hot spots. Microsoft’s president, Brad Smith, said white spaces were “the best solution for reaching over 80 percent of people in rural America who lack broadband today.” While a promising idea, the cost of the devices needed for the undertaking is still a big problem.
