Will autonomous driving wheelchairs give people with mobility problems more freedom? Image source: Shutterstock (#275636621)
MIT researchers have put the same hardware from self-driving cars into a wheelchair. The wheelchair is equipped with three LiDAR sensors and works exactly like a self-driving car. Before the wheelchair can be used, someone drives through a given area and sensors build a detailed map that shows how wide the hallways are and where the pillars are. Then the user selects where to go by clicking on the map and the chair starts. The sensors attached to the wheelchair, detect moving obstacles like people while driving.
