South-East Asia has been severely hit by El Niño in September this year. Especially the Mekong river along which much of the region’s economic activity is located will take months or years to recover according to the UN and others. The region is therefore urged to take measures to prepare for extreme weather and to set up a number of response activities to reduce the effect of the threat. More frequent extreme weather as a consequence of climate change has a great impact on the ecologically fragile area around the Mekong river.
