The Koutoubia Mosque in Morocco is one the first mosques that have solar panels installed and one of the most-high profile ones in the country. They have been recently installed but already prove success. The panels are for covering light and energy needs of the mosque. They are not visible from the street. In front of the mosque there is a panel that shows how much electricity is produced at any given time and how many carbon emissions have been avoided. The project is supported by Morocco’s Ministry of Islamic Affairs which is responsible of around 50,000 mosques across the country and the energy and water in approximately 15,000. The government plans to install electricity producing PV, or photovoltaic panels, LED lighting and solar thermal water heaters at around 600 mosques by 2019. The project aims at generating a common sense of renewable energy use and sustainable energy use and management.
