Last year, renewable energy sources made up nearly nine-tenths of new power added to the electricity grids in Europe. Wind energy has overtaken coal as the largest form of power capacity in the EU. In 2016 of the total 24,5GW new capacity built, 86 percent was from wind, solar, biomass and hydro. Germany has installed the most new wind capacity last year. France, the Netherlands, Finland, Ireland and Lithuania set new records for windfarm installation. However, industry leaders are worried about the missing political support beyond 2020 when the legally binding EU energy targets expire.
