Against common belief that broader streets create safer streets, a new study shows that streets broader than 3.25 m trigger more traffic fatalities. On the other side, too narrow streets, such as in Jakarta or Singapore, are unsafe too. The optimal street width is 2.80- 3.25 m according to the study. Regulations have to be changed and traffic planners better informed in order to create safer, but also more sustainable traffic systems.
