National Grid prepares balancing service market for lower carbon energy system

National Grid has released its first ever System Needs and Product Strategy document yesterday, outlining expectations on the evolving balancing services market and starting a new consultation. The goal is to meet the demands of an increasingly flexible and distributed energy system.

Balancing services help the grid operator respond to rapid changes in power supply or demand, and they are expected to become increasingly important as the grid starts to rely on a growing proportion of intermittent renewable energy sources. To accomodate for the shift, energy storage technologies and demand response services will have to be used much wider.
