New AI-based recycling robot might solve waste problem

AMP Robotics has developed an AI-driven robot called Clarke that recognizes and sorts various food and beverage containers. Using a visible-light camera, it diverts waste from landfills and sends it to the appropriate recycling facility. Scanning 1 item per second and with an accuracy of around 90 percent, the robot is about half as cheap as human labor.

As the robot is AI-based, it also continually gets smarter. “Even though this first system is picking cartons, it’s actually watching and learning from all the other commodities that it’s seeing as well,” AMP Robotics founder Mantanya Horowitz says. “That’s what’s really exciting. The more systems that we have out there, the better they’re going to be.”

Clarke has already been deployed in a municipal waste facility in Denver, Colorado.
