New geothermal systems research in abandoned mine

The Homestake Gold Mine in Lead, South Dakota, has been the Sanford Underground Research Facility, or SURF, since 2006, but the deepest underground research lab in the U.S. is about to become the home for a new geothermal research project.

The project named Collab is led by the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) and utilizes Enhanced Geothermal Systems (EGS).
