In 2016 the world temperatures reached a record high for the third year in a row. The consequences were extreme weather including the unprecedented heat in India and ice melt in the Arctic. The average global surface temperatures were 0,83 degree Celsius above the long-term average of 14 degrees Celsius. The findings by the U.N.-affiliated World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) show new signs of the impact of greenhouse gases. The El Niño phenomenon partly contributed to the temperature rise as well. 2016 beat the record already hit in 2015 so the ongoing long-term warming trend is clear.
