Last November NASA launched its GOES-16 weather satellite into the orbit about 22,000 miles from the earth. On January 15, it sent back pictures for the first time. The new satellite has three times the spectral channels capturing images at four times the resolution, with five times the efficiency. GOES-16 scans the globe within 15 minutes and major weather events in 30 seconds. That provides a lot more data to validate weather and climate models. Moreover, natural disasters can be better predicted. In 2018 GOES-S will be launched so European and Asian countries have their own weather satellite.
