It might seem counterintuitive at first, but New Orleans’ plan, conceived as part of the Rockefeller Foundation’s 100 Resilient Cities initiative, is customized to the very distinct geography of the city. Acknowleding that pumping out too much water is detrimental to the soil, excess water will now be diverted into the surrounding landscape. A so-called water garden and vacant areas will be able store massive amounts of water, and permeable sidewalks are being built. The pilot project will be realized in the Gentilly district as experiences will be transferable to other similar neighborhoods in the States.
