New Zealand is regularly hit by earthquakes and the consequent damages are not just environmental and human. Also damages in infrastructure can mean a loss of important transportation links and therefore a damage to social and economic activity. Earthquakes can further trigger land slides which cause even more infrastructural damage. To prepare for earthquakes and to built infrastructure that is resilient is of high importance though extremely difficult. Long-term strategies and true cost calculations are needed to increase resilience for New Zealand.
