Newcastle, the coal capital of Australia, is receiving more than half a billion dollars of public investments to help with its goal to be the next big smart city in the country. The money will be used to revitalize the city center, help the University of Newcastle to become a more competitive presence, and build a $500 million light-rail system that will connect to existing ferry and bus routes.

The goal, says Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes, “is to be a smart, livable and sustainable city.” And progress is going well as the public investment has led to private investors contributing as well. The population of Newcastle is constantly rising, with old warehouses being repurposed as residences.
