The Larne compressed air energy storage (CAES) project by developer Gaelectric from Northern Ireland has secured €90 million in funding from the EU in the framework of the TEN-E regulation. The innovative project will design natural salt deposits underground to store 330 megawatts of renewable power. Air is compressed and stored in the caves to be released to operate generators for up to eight hours.
