Oakland residents get to choose where to put federal grant money

To benefit low- and moderate-income residents, Oakland, California, has carried out their Participatory Budgeting Project (PBP), in the course of which two city council districts voted on what they deemed most important for their communities in the first-ever participatory budgeting process applied to federal community development block grant (CDBG) money.

With each district having had a resident board to set priorities before the project, it was easier to implement an online platform this past December. Budget assemblies in January and voting in February followed. Results are now being put into practice.
