The medals for the Olympic games in Tokyo 2020 will be made from metals used in discarded smartphones. It is part of dealing with the huge amounts of e-waste. The organizing committee anounced the official launch of the campaign on Wednesday. It is supposed to encourage people to recycle their smartphones so the medals can be produced. A lot of gadgets contain small amounts of precious and rare earth metals like gold, silver, platinum and nickel. The Japanese cellular company NTT Docomo and the Japan Environmental Sanitation Center aim at gathering at least eight tons of metal from discarded mobile phones to produce enough material for the 5,000 medals.
