UK-Congolese scientists discovered the world’s largest tropical peatland in the Congo swamps. It is estimated to store the equivalent of three year’s worth of the global total fossil fuel emissions. The peatlands cover 145,500 sq km. The swamps could lock 30 billion tonnes of carbon which had not been known before and makes the region one of the most carbon-rich ecosystems. They store the equivalent of nearly 30 percent of tropical peatland carbon which is about 20 years of the U.S. fossil fuel emissions.
