The coal-fired Hazelwood power station in the La Trobe Valley near Melbourne, VIC, Australia will be closed in March next year. It generates 5.4 percent of Australia’s electricity supply and 25 percent for the state of Victoria. The French company Engie which is in charge of the station wants to concentrate solely on low-carbon projects for power generation, renewable energy and natural gas. The closure would help decrease carbon emissions by 3 percent in Australia which has one of the highest per capita carbon emissions in the world.
