The biorefineries research group at Aalto university has made headway in the process of finding a way to recycle or upcycle clothes. To prevent fast fashion ending up in landfills and creating carbon dioxide, the team has developed a technique to dissolve cotton into a cellulose solution without affecting the polyester in blended textiles.
Reusing the dyes as well might be a next step, but the fashion industry and governments will have to adjust logistics, as, for example, labelling is not sufficient right now. The results of the research presented at the 253rd National Meeting & Exposition of the American Chemical Society (ACS) this week.
