Oxford to introduce zero-emissions city centre; banning petrol cars

The city of Oxford plans to initiate what officials believe would be the world’s first zero-emissions zone in the city centre of Oxford. The plan that is put out for consultation seeks to introduce the ban in phases starting with preventing non-zero-emitting taxis, cars, light commercial vehicles and buses from using a small number of streets in 2020. It is planned to extend the ban to all non-electric vehicles by 2035. Oxford expects its nitrogen dioxide levels to fall by up to three-quarters by 2035, as the city council announced. Data release by the WHO showed that Oxford breeched its levels of PM10 and PM2,5 last year and was one out of 11 cities to have reached a critical level of toxic materials in the air. The city administration has received governmental funding for its plans but also reminds that this is not the only way to reach the goal of a zero-emission zone.
