Palo Alto, California, is showing other cities that being willing to fail when it comes to smart city projects can be good for progress. The city has big smart city ambitions with more than 25 projects, including smart grid and intelligent street lighting, a traffic flow and parking monitoring platform, and nearly everything in between.

Officials state that digital innovation and outside partnerships are important in today’s world, and that they work closely with Stanford University to obtain federal funding for city projects, and their solution providers to learn from their mistakes.

Palo Alto encourages other communities to have an innovation agenda, no matter the volume, as rethinking how cities operate is vital for the future.
