Portugal has a very developed wind industry. It has been planning a new project called Perdigão which is the world’s most detailed wind-mapping project. Within the next five months, an international team of researchers will measure nearly everything about the wind that blows in a rural valley in Eastern Europe where the project is supposed to be put into practice. On the one hand the results should help to use wind efficiently for generating energy. On the other hand the results of the project should improve models of how air pollution sinks into valleys and help flying vehicles to navigate through turbulent mountain terrain. Moreover, the researchers will be able to find other places for the installation of wind turbines.
