After having stated to reduce air traffic emissions, plans have been made to tackle global greenhouse gas emissions in the maritime sector. A final plan will not be ready for six years, though. The plan, made by the International Maritime Organisation (IMO), is expected to be released by 2018. It is part of the UN-led assessment of global climate policies. A 2014 IMO study said the maritime greenhouse gas emissions could rise 50-250% by 2050. On Friday negotiations took place between 45 countries including major nations like the US, China, Brazil, India, UK but also smaller ones such as Panama and the Marshall Islands. The maritime sector is responsible for nearly 3% of global greenhouse gas emissions, but has historically struggled to deliver a consensus on how to cut carbon pollution.
