Phoenix, Arizona, is actively involving its residents in the city’s waste management. The “Reimagine Phoenix” initiative aims at increasing the city’s waste diversion rate to 40 percent by 2020 and zero waste by 2050. Involving the residents is an essential part of the initiative. Residents should be encouraged to make sustainable disposal habits through gamification and education. Phoenix has concluded a contract with “Recyclebank”, a startup which works on altering the community behaviour around waste. With the help of Recyclebank, Phoenix, wants to change its resident’s behaviour concerning their waste. Recyclebank operates in 350 communities across 50 states and has been working with companies such as Disney to reduce their environmental impact.
