Renault and Powervault join hands for EV battery re-use trial

Renault and Powervault have joined hands in the UK to re-use electric vehicle (EV) batteries in the home energy storage units, thereby reducing the cost of Powervault smart battery unit by 30%. At the moment, Powervault is testing this concept in 50 homes where solar panels are already installed. Along with testing for the battery performance, the company also plans to understand the customer reactions to help develop a mass roll-out strategy. Customers of M&S Energy, social housing tenants and schools in the East are the planned sites for the trials. “Thanks to this home energy storage partnership with Powervault, Renault is adding a new element into its global strategy for second life batteries, which already covers a large number of usages from industrial to residential building and districts. The second life use not only gives additional life to electric vehicle batteries before they are recycled, but also allow consumers to save money,” said Nicolas Schottey, Program Director, EV batteries and infrastructures at Renault.
