While the whole devastating impact of hurricane Matthew on farmers’ livelihoods, the environment and public health is not entirely clear yet, it can be said that the damage is enormous, especially in North Carolina. Policies and intitiatives can help to adopt to more frequent extreme weather: the relocation of farms, which are among one of the most afflicted, as well as improvements in manure management can be supported by the state. Other essential measures are a general cut in greenhouse gas emissions and to rebalance the money spent on preparation (millions) and money spent on repair (billions).
