A new survey of US cities shows that Salt Lake City is leading in measures for LGBTQ inclusion. This is especially outstanding considering the city’s location in a red state. It shows that conservativism and LGBTQ rights do not have to contradict each other. At the same time the city showed how local political action can influence federal law-making: In 2009 Salt Lake City adopted an anti-discrimination policy for housing and employment against LGBTQ; six years later adopted nation-wide.
