San Diego vehicle fleet: largest one powered by renewable diesel in the US

San Diego intends to have the largest municipal vehicle fleet powered by renewable diesel in the United States. The fleet includes vehicles from street sweepers to refuse packers to firetrucks. The plan is part of the citiy’s goal of cutting greenhouse gas emissions in half by 2035. Initially San Diego planned to switch from diesel to compressed natural gas but renewable diesel was cheaper and cleaner for the environment. Renewable diesel is refined to the same standards as petroleum-based diesel. It can be transportet and stored using the same infrastructure. It is made from vegetable oil, animal fats and agricultural waste. The renewable diesel supply is a serious issue. At the moment the city is getting it from Neste’s production facility in Singapore.
