Car manufacturers such as VW, Ford, GM and Toyota are about to construct driverless cars and put them on the streets within the next five years. Driverless cars are, compared to manually steered cars, very prone to being hacked. Cybersecurity is a severe issue when it comes to driverless cars which can be easily hacked. At that point state regulations become very important. The Department of Transportation’s (DoT) recent guidance on self-driving cars is a good start in addressing cybersecurity, but leaves a lot to be desired. The policies lack behind the rapidly evolving technologies. “Best practices” are not enough. Stricter rules and regulations necessarily have to be implemented as well as strong penalties for violations and fines.
