The company “Wattway” is constructing 100 outdoor test sites to test their solar-panel road technology which should be commercialized in early 2018. The idea behind those roads is that solar farms use land that could be used for agriculture whereas roads are free. The kilometer-sized testing site construction began last month in Tourouvre, Normandy (France). 2800 square meters of solar panels are expected to generate 280 kilowatts. This would be enough power to supply public lighting in a town of 5000 inhabitants for a year. The next two test sites will be installed Calgary (Canada) and the U.S. state of Georgia. Further test sites are planned to be built in Arica, Japan and Europe to test all kinds of different traffic and climate conditions. The solar-panel roads are able to withstand the weight of an 18-wheeler truck.
