SolaRoad, a Dutch company manufacturing solar panels that can be embedded into roads, is making progress in the domain of sustainable transport. Their pilot project, a small stretch of bike path equipped with the technology, is generating a lot more electricity than anticipated.
Although the panels are not able to reach cost parity with rooftop solar as of now, supporters are not concerned. Solar bike paths are not competing with other means of electricity generation, but with conventional bike paths.
The innovation is gaining ground in other countries as well, with Solar Roadways in the US, and Colas equipping streets in France.
