The article is an excerpt of Michael Berkowitz’s, president of 100 Resilient Cities, plenary speech at the Habitat III Conference. In his speech he comprehensively states what urban resilience is about and why it matters so much. In short: Resilience is about cities becoming stronger not only good but also in bad times. It is about ensuring that cities can rebuild better and about handling the expected as well as the unexpected. Moreover he especially stresses the importance of the collaboration between cities, the private sector and the civil society.
