Startup wants to clean up the Great Pacific Garbage Patch

The non-profit startup Ocean Cleanup has the ambitious goal to clean up the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, a huge accumulation of debris in the ocean. Using floating devices made of high-density polyurethane, the debris will be collected as early as 2018. The system incorporates a solid sailing sea screen that is durable enough to last decades. Once the screen is full of garbage, a support vessel collects the captured debris and ships it away to be processed and recycled.

The startup hopes to expand the system to other marine trash vortices in case of success.
