A new study by a team of researchers from academic institutions and NGOs reveils the key role traditional forest guardians play in the fight against climate change. According to the document, the most cost-effective measure to protect forests and thereby the the storage of forest carbon, is to strengthen tribal land rights. With this study the authors hope to raise awareness for climate change and indigenous rights especially in the upcoming COP22 in Marocco. Only a few countries have so far taken indigenous rights on their national action agenda, which does not only bring benefits in the fight against climate change, but also biodiversity, flood control and tourist attractions.
