Citizens in the German city of Stuttgart, known for its automotive industry, have now sued city officials for not taking effective steps against the persisting high levels of air pollution. Only in January 2017, Stuttgart’s figures for air quality did not meat EU standards 25 times. While the problem has been around for more than a decade, all measures, from truck bans to cheaper public transport on days of high air pollution, did not make a change. Instead air quality is actually dropping, putting a risk to human health and the environment.
