On Monday China released the first list of “recommended” green energy vehicles. 185 car models will receive government subsidies. Later this year even more car models are expected to be approved. The government has spent huge amounts of money to promote electric and plug-in hybrid cars to help the domestic auto industry develop the technology to pass global competitors. At the same time it is an effort to reduce heavy urban air pollution. Due to cheating in the subsidy program the government stopped subsidies and raised technical standards for applicants so former approved models have to apply again this year.
