Survey suggests ways to make car-owners use public transport

A recent survey by the US-based research and consulting firm Conduent, which specializes in public transportation and urban mobility, reveals what drivers value in public transport services in 23 cities across 15 countries. The findings were published in the report “The customer experience of urban travel.”

To switch to a cleaner transport alternative, drivers say they would need it to be reliable, and that they would need quick access to regularly updated schedules and routes. “Travelers want a seamless experience, whether it’s the train, bus or a ride-hailing service,” the report says. “For this to happen, attitudes will need to shift, with public transportation providers partnering with private providers rather than seeing them as competition.”

Suggestions the report makes include apps that offer clear information, campaigns to educate about the advantages of public transport, offering transport operators incentives to improve, and using big data to scale transport up or down when deemed appropriate. Model cities are Singapore with its car-light approach, Copenhagen and Amsterdam because of their focus on bicycling, and Paris as it takes drastic measures to reduce driving.
