Australia’s probably most iconic landmark, the Opera House in Sydney, also stands out when it comes to sustainability. It has been awarded a four-star rating for green building performance. From the time of its construction in the 1970s, innovation was essential: instead of using fresh water, the opera houses draws on sea water for its cooling system. In 2010 a comprehensive sustainability plan was laid out for the facility, including energy reduction, waste managment and sustainable cleaning guidelines which also cut operating costs significantly. In order to raise awareness for its efforts and for sustainability in general, the Opera House, together with Airbnb, organizes behind-the-scenes tours for the public.
