Currently there is a city under construction that might become the most sustainable town in America. Babcock Ranch will be almost exclusively powered by solar energy, only resorting to natural gas for days the sun does not shine over Florida. Kitson & Partners, the company behind the project, has a vision of neighborhoods with community gardens, a driverless and electric public transport fleet, and energy efficient buildings throughout. The objective is to show that development, innovation and preservation can create a model that is both economical and forward-thinking.
Florida Power & Light will supply the city through a new solar power plant built in Charlotte County. The first residents of Babcock Ranch will move in some time during the coming fall and winter.
