Initially founded in 2010 as a respond to the earthquake in Haiti, the Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team has developed and spread globally. The project provides freely available and accurate geographic data that can be used by humanitarian responders to natural disasters and crises. The maps can also be used for communities to support the formulation and pursue of their own development goals. Finally it provides a base for sharing experiences: What worked for people in one disaster zone, can be useful for people in another one.
