The latest forecast of the development of the energy sector has been gathered by the International Energy Agency in its World Energy Outlook. The document states that the consumption of fossil fuels will continue even though these sources will ultimately be replaced by natural gas and renewables. The ongoing use of fossil fuels will challenge to reach climate goals. The document estimates that more drastic steps for decarbonization and more efficiency are necessary to encounter climate change. Great potentials to do so are seen in the industrial, transportation and building sector. Another major aspect is energy security due to both changes in investment and unreliable power generation from renewables. In the end the development will greatly depend on government policies.
