Toughest plastic bag ban implemented in Kenya

Kenya joins a growing number of other nations including Rwanda, Mauritania, France and Eritrea outlawing the production and use of plastic bags. The Kenyan government attempts to gain control over the amounting plastic waste on Kenya’s landfills. Approximately 24 million plastic bags are used each month and Kenya is also a major exporter of plastic bags in the region. Fines for violating the ban on plastic bags will  range between $19,000 and $38,000 or jail terms of up to four years. Especially producers and distributors will face severe charges, whereas ordinary Kenyans will be confronted with confiscation. Manufacturers have largely opposed to the new law reminding that it will cost thousands of jobs.
