Mayors Adapt is the Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy initiative on urban adaption to climate change. Now eleven cities from seven EU countries have been chosen and matched to a “twin city” on the basis of their climate and geographic characteristics, socio-economic and institutional specificities and adaptation knowledge. These peer-to-peer exchanges are supposed to increase the capacity and knowledge to adapt to climate change. Representatives from the eleven cities will vistit their twin between November 2016 and January 2017. This will connect cities that have just started their adaptation and cities that have already developed successful resilience strategies.
The twinned cities (mentor city in bold) and their shared focus are the following:
- Isola Vicentina (Italy), Agueda (Portugal) and Andrano (Italy) – Flood protection.
- Sevilla (Spain), Thessaloniki (Greece) and Braga (Portugal) – Water management, governance and planning.
- Peer-learning exchange between Bratislava (Slovakia), Bremen (Germany) and Arnhem (Netherlands) – Adaptation planning, stakeholder engagement, urban heat islands.
- Peer-learning exchange between Murcia (Spain) and Piraeus (Greece) – Urban water management, adaptation to extreme temperatures.
